Tirupur is the main importer and exporter in textile and knitwear hub contributing to 90% of total cotton knitwear exports from India. The city has been in cotton, loom and yarn trading since the 13th century and later formed a coalition with the British in garment trading during the early 19th century. During the late 1990s and early 2000's the city transformed into a global powerhouse in garment manufacturing trading with Europe, UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and the middle east.
